County Commissions Announce Public Hearings On Property Tax Rates

July 13, 2023

Each year in the State of Georgia, when the total digest of a county’s taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate -the roll back rate - would have produced had no reassessments occurred.

Furthermore, should a county commission choose not to adopt the roll back rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.

Both Dawson County and Forsyth County recently announced their intent to maintain their current millage rate, which in effect will raise the 2023 property taxes it will collect this year. By maintaining their current tax rate, Dawson County will generate 14.51% more revenue than the rollback millage rate and Forsyth County will collect 15.31% more than their rollback rate.

Dawson County will hold its second hearing on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. and the third hearing on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. with millage adoption following the third hearing on August 3. CLICK HERE for more information on Dawson County’s millage rate and public hearings.

Forsyth County will hold its second hearing on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at 11 a.m. and its third hearing on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at 6 p.m. The adoption of the final millage rate will take place following the third hearing on July 20.
